Ear aesthetics play a significant role in developing self-confidence, especially in childhood. Prominent ears are characterized by the ear protruding from the base of the skull or the underdevelopment of the second fold within the ear. While it is a deformity, it can also lead to teasing in children.

How is the Surgery Performed?

The ideal time for surgery is just before the start of school, around the age of 4-5. This timing is intended to prevent psychological trauma the child may experience at school. Aesthetic concerns can be addressed starting at this age and in later years.

The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia or, for younger patients, under general anesthesia. An incision is usually made behind the ear to shape the cartilage, correct any deformities, or bring the ear closer if it is far from the base of the skull. If the earlobe is large, it can be reduced. The surgery takes approximately one hour. Stitches are generally not removed after the surgery.

Treatment Duration

Following the surgery, a light dressing is applied and a bandage is placed around the ears. The patient is discharged the same day. The bandages are removed on the fourth day, and bathing is permitted. You may experience mild swelling and tenderness in the first weeks. After surgery, you should wear a tennis headband to protect your ear all day for the first two weeks and only at night for the following two weeks.
