Unlike breast augmentation, breast reduction is generally performed for health reasons beyond aesthetic considerations. Enlarged breasts due to development, pregnancy, or excessive weight gain can cause health problems such as shoulder and back pain, poor posture, redness and itching under the breast, and fungal infections.

Before breast reduction surgery, the relationship between growth and hormonal issues is determined, and the likelihood of continued growth is assessed. Furthermore, the presence of painful or painless lumps in the breast, infections, and any previous surgeries are assessed.

How Is the Surgery Performed?
After the necessary tests are performed, the technique to be used is determined based on breast size, skin, and mammary gland characteristics. The surgery, performed under anesthesia, can take between 2 and 4 hours.

If the breast size is due to fatty tissue, the breast shape is well-formed and the skin is elastic, and there is no sagging, only liposuction is performed. However, if sagging is present, the nipple is elevated to its proper position, and the empty areas above the breast are filled. Additionally, the breast tissue spreading under the armpit is repositioned to a smaller area, and excess skin and breast tissue are removed.

What is the Treatment Duration?
Although you are allowed to stand up four hours after the surgery, the hospital stay is one or two days. A drain is placed for one to two days to drain any leakage from the surgical site and prevent blood accumulation in the tissues. The breast area remains bandaged for one week, and then thin tapes are applied for one week. Breast reduction surgery leaves some scarring, depending on the technique used, but it diminishes significantly after six months.

Will breastfeeding be affected after surgery?
Whether the connection between the nipple and milk ducts will be disrupted depends on your decision and the technique used. The pros and cons of both will be explained during the examination. The amount of breast tissue removed will also affect milk production and secretion.

How is the reduction in breast size determined?
In addition to breast size and sagging, achieving a natural look is also a determining factor.

Will there be scarring after surgery? Thanks to the techniques used today, the scar will appear as a J, a single straight line, or an inverted T for the first six months and will fade over time. In the early stages, some dark-skinned individuals may experience visible scarring, redness, and itching. This requires medication. After six months, the scars will noticeably diminish.

Does the surgery cause loss of sensation in the breast?
Depending on the distance the nipple is moved and the extent of the reduction, some loss of sensation may occur in the nipple.

Is it necessary to wear a bra?
A special, supportive bra must be worn continuously for the first month. Extending the use for up to three months is recommended.
