Rhinoplasty is a surgery performed to change the appearance of the nose. Its primary goal is to achieve a natural-looking, healthy nose that is in harmony with the rest of the face.
Rhinoplasty can correct genetic or accidental damage and can also help eliminate some respiratory problems.
The Scope of Rhinoplasty
In addition to restoring the natural appearance of arched and large noses, rhinoplasty also includes correcting crooked noses, tipplasty, and procedures that shape the nostrils and wings. Deviation and turbinate correction, which address breathing problems, can also be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
Rhinoplasty surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and take approximately 1-2 hours. The procedure can be performed either closed, using incisions made inside the nose, or open, using millimeter-sized incisions made outside the nose to reveal the entire nasal structure. Only tip plasty procedures are performed under local anesthesia under appropriate conditions. These surgeries involve additions or subtractions to the bone and cartilage of the nose. Respiratory problems that accompany the appearance of the problem are addressed simultaneously within the same surgery.
Some cosmetic surgeries may require the addition of tissue to the nose. One or all of these changes can be accomplished in a single surgery.
What is the Treatment Duration?
Following the surgery, the patient is discharged the same day or the following day. Except in cases of significant leakage, only the nasal lining is sutured and a protective cast is placed over the nose.
Once the surgery is completed, cold compresses are applied to the area around the eyes, and the patient is able to eat and drink within 3-4 hours. Post-operative bruising and swelling are only seen in a small number of patients, but if present, they begin to subside within the third day. While the shape of the nose becomes more pronounced within the first month, it typically takes 6 months to a year to fully settle.
